Natural Alternatives to Energy Drinks: What 34 Years Taught Me About Real Energy

I’ve never been a morning person. Not once in my life.

But for more than 30 years I’ve had a trick that gets me from “leave me alone” to functional in about ten minutes. It’s a protein shake. I don’t drink coffee, so this is my coffee, and it’s the first thing I do every single morning.

Let me be honest about something first. Some mornings I swear I feel myself waking up while I’m still drinking it. That’s probably the ritual as much as the nutrition.

I’m Carl LaFlamme. My wife Suzanne and I are independent Shaklee Ambassadors, and we’ve used these products on ourselves daily for more than three decades. If you’re looking for natural alternatives to energy drinks, I want to walk you through what’s actually worked, including the parts that don’t.

The problem isn’t caffeine. It’s caffeine with nothing underneath it.

A large coffee cup labeled “COFFEE” is mounted on a black metal tower, set against a blue sky with clouds—symbolizing natural energy alternatives that offer long-lasting energy without the need for typical energy drink substitutes.I want to get this out of the way early, because most articles like this one start by telling you caffeine is the enemy.

It isn’t. I’ll name the caffeine in my own products further down this page, and some of it is a real dose.

Here’s the actual problem. An energy drink is a loan. You borrow alertness now against a body that has nothing funding the loan. There’s no protein in it. There are no minerals doing anything. It’s a stimulant riding on sugar, and when both run out, you land. That landing is the crash everybody knows, and the standard response is to take out a second loan around two in the afternoon.

None of that says caffeine is bad. It says caffeine can’t be the whole plan. Ask a stimulant to do a job that belongs to nutrition and it will do that job badly, every single day, for years.

What natural alternatives to energy drinks actually means

The phrase gets used loosely, so here’s what I mean by it. It isn’t a different stimulant in a nicer bottle. It’s putting a floor under your day and then deciding whether you want a tool on top of it.

That order matters more than the products do.

What drew me to Shaklee in the first place was Dr. Forrest Shaklee’s founding idea of living in harmony with nature, and his conviction that good nutrition is the foundation everything else rests on. Not an add-on. Not a rescue. The foundation. Thirty-four years later I still think that’s the right way around, and it’s the reason my morning starts with something that feeds me rather than something that prods me.

Give your body real material to work with and it does more with it than any shortcut will.

The test isn’t hour one. It’s hour three.

Anything with caffeine in it works at hour one. That’s not a useful test.

I’m not the only one watching that clock. In a July 2026 survey of 2,000 American adults, the average person’s energy dropped at 2:48 in the afternoon. Among the ones reaching for caffeine to fix it, 43% said the lift faded inside two hours, and the average busy day ran to 4.6 caffeinated drinks. One thing worth knowing: a dairy company paid for that survey, so I’d take its findings about protein with a grain of salt. The timing on caffeine is the part that matches what customers tell us.

Here’s mine, and I’ll give it to you plainly because the honest version is less dramatic than the sales version.

At three hours in of my morning protein shake, I don’t notice anything. No lift, no dip, nothing. That’s it. That’s the whole result.

I know how that sounds. But think about what you’re comparing it to. With a large coffee or an energy drink, something dramatic happens twice. It happens at the start, and it happens again around hour three when the floor drops out. Nothing happening is the entire point. Nothing happening is what a normal day is supposed to feel like.

At about five hours I get hungry for lunch. That’s not a crash. That’s lunch.

The clearest evidence I have isn’t from the days I take it. It’s from the rare day I miss. I’m more sluggish and I’m tired earlier, and I notice it without having to look for it. Our customers tell us the same thing, usually when they’ve run out and are waiting on the next shipment. That’s when people find out what the shake was doing, which is a strange kind of proof, but it’s the most convincing one I know.

Robert didn’t quit coffee

Older man sitting at a kitchen table, using a laptop with one hand and holding a coffee mug in the other, perhaps researching natural alternatives to energy drinks to boost his focus and energy throughout the day.Robert is 60. That isn’t his real name, but everything else here is. He drank three cups of coffee a day and took no supplements at all. His complaint wasn’t that he couldn’t get started. He got started fine. He was gassed by the end of the day, every day.

He added a protein shake in the morning and couldn’t believe how much better he felt.

Here’s my favorite part, and it’s the reason I’m telling you about him instead of somebody with a tidier story. Robert still drinks his three cups. He just started putting vanilla Life Shake in his coffee instead of creamer. When he told me, I laughed and said little steps.

I’m not asking you to give anything up. Robert didn’t. He put a floor under a habit he was going to keep anyway, and the thing that changed wasn’t his morning. It was his evening.

That’s worth sitting with, because Robert and I run out of gas at different hours. I’d have told you the test is hour three. For Robert it was hour six or seven. Both of us were asking caffeine to cover for a foundation that wasn’t there, and it covered for a while, and then it stopped.

What this won’t do

If I only tell you what worked, I haven’t told you much.

If something medical is going on, see a doctor. Fatigue is a symptom, and thyroid issues, sleep apnea, low iron and plenty of medications all cause it. No shake touches any of that, and I’d never suggest otherwise. But you still have to eat. You still have to fuel your body while you and your doctor sort out the rest. Those two things were never in competition.

If you’re sleeping five hours a night, start there. Nutrition doesn’t outrun sleep debt. Nothing does.

If you take it now and then, don’t expect much. My case rests on 30 years of doing it every single morning, not on a shake. Occasional use gets occasional results, and that’s not the product failing. That’s arithmetic.

And if you’re waiting for a jolt, you’ll be disappointed. There isn’t one. It isn’t a jolt. It’s more a feeling of nourishment, and if you’ve spent years measuring energy by how hard something hits you, that difference takes a little while to recognize as a feature rather than a letdown.

What I actually reach for

Two tiers, and the order is the whole point.

A white pouch labeled "Shaklee Life Shake French Vanilla Plant Protein" with a glass of light beige shake pictured on the front. Nutritional highlights and serving size are listed below, emphasizing the benefits of Shaklee protein for a healthy lifestyle. The floor is Life Shake. Twenty grams of protein, vitamins and minerals, no added sugar. It’s the reason hour three is uneventful. And also the thing most people quit before they get anywhere, and the reason is almost never the nutrition. It’s that they tried some protein shake years ago and couldn’t get past the taste or the chalky texture. We think this one tastes good and goes down smooth, and our customers tell us the same, which matters for one unglamorous reason: you’ll actually keep drinking it. A shake you abandon in week two does nothing for you. I’ve laid out why I think it’s a better protein powder separately, so I won’t rehash it here.

On top of the floor, when the day calls for it, there are tools. Here is where I’ll give you the numbers most people in my position leave out. For a yardstick, a cup of brewed coffee runs about 95 milligrams of caffeine.

  • Energizing Tea, about 70 milligrams. A blend of green matcha, white and red teas. This is my warm pick-me-up, the one that feels more like a ritual than a fix.
  • Sustained Energy Boost, 100 milligrams. From green coffee bean extract and green tea extract, plus chardonnay grape seed extract to support healthy circulation. This is for days I know will run long.
  • Energy Chews, 60 milligrams per chew, 120 for the full two-chew serving. Caffeine from natural green tea extract, plus L-theanine, L-tyrosine, B vitamins and vitamin D. That full serving is more than a standard can of Red Bull. What’s different is what it’s riding on. Green tea rather than sugar, L-theanine alongside the caffeine to take the edge off it, and, in my case, a breakfast that already did its job. Here’s my fuller review of the energy chews if you want the details.

Read that list back and notice two things.

It’s a dial, not a switch. Seventy milligrams on an ordinary afternoon, 120 before something demanding. That choice only exists if somebody tells you the numbers, which is exactly why I printed them.

And not one of those is breakfast. Every one is something I reach for on top of a foundation, on a particular kind of day, for a particular reason. That’s the whole difference between a tool and a loan.

Two different clocks

All the energy products listed work fast. That’s what caffeine does. You’ll notice it inside the hour, and if I’m describing it honestly, it isn’t a jolt so much as a dial being turned up a notch.

The floor runs on a completely different clock, and I don’t want anyone confusing the two.

Shaklee’s guarantee is “Feel better in 30 days or your money back,” and in my experience that timeline is honest. Most people notice sooner. Some notice in the first week. But that’s the shake I’m talking about, not the chews, and the shake is the part worth being patient about. It isn’t something you’ll feel on Tuesday. It’s a floor you build, and floors get built one ordinary morning at a time. Give it the month.

And if you want to know whether the Life Shake was doing anything, you’ll find out the same way Robert and I did. Stop for a few days and pay attention.

If you want to talk it through

Since September 1992, the thing I’ve grown most confident about is the order of operations. Foundation first, tools second and no stimulant asked to do a job that belongs to food.

If you’re trying to sort out where to start, or you have questions about what fits your situation, Suzanne and I are happy to talk. Feel free to reach out. That conversation is free and there’s no pitch attached to it.
